Endothelial cells in the angiogenic vessels within solid tumors express several proteins that are absent or barely detectable in established blood vessels, including alphav integrins and receptors for certain angiogenic growth factors. CX7C library was screened in mice carrying human MDA-MB-435 breast carcinoma xenografts. Phage displaying CDCRGDCFC, homed to several tumor types (including carcinoma, sarcoma, and melanoma) in a highly selective manner, and homing is specifically inhibited by the cognate peptide. The embedded motif RGD has been shown to bind selectively to alphav beta3 and alphav beta5 integrins.
