pVIII-9aa contained "unconstrained" nonapeptides inserted into the amino terminus of the pVIII coat protein of bacteriophage f1. pVIII-9aa.Cys contained nonapeptides "constrained" by a disulphide bond formed by an additional cysteine at each end of the peptide. Phagemids were propagated using the related helper phage M13KO7 (Promega, Madison, USA).
